What is the difference between the Toyota SE & LE?

Toyota has several models of every vehicle it sells. Some are about performance, some are about aesthetics and comfort, and some are about mileage and the environment. The SE and LE Toyota Camry models are two of the most popular models in Toyota's large fleet. The SE, or sport edition, has certain functional and cosmetic differences from the LE, or luxury edition.

Introducing

Both models have the same turning radius, anti-lock brakes, basic suspension system and 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. However, there are performance differences between the two models. The SE model has a 179 horsepower engine, while the LE model has a 169 horsepower engine. The SE's sporty shocks lower the car by about an inch to give the driver a more athletic driving experience.

Cosmetics

The LE model sits noticeably higher than the SE model. The SE also has a blacked-out mesh sport grill, while the LE has a standard plastic grill. The SE's front and rear body spoiler adds to the "sporty" look of the car. Other cosmetic differences are the SE's 17-inch alloy wheels and the LE's 16-inch steel wheels with hubcaps. The SE also has a dual chrome exhaust, smoky trim and fog lights.

Options

LE and SE models have the option to upgrade their sound system. They can also upgrade to the 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine, which gives them 238 horsepower. SE options include heated seats, an electronically adjustable passenger seat, a rear spoiler, heated mirrors and a voice-activated DVD entertainment center. The SE also has a "smart key system" that allows drivers to open the door and start the car without taking the key out of their pocket or purse.

Price

The standard LE model starts at $22,100 for the four-cylinder engine. The LE with six cylinders starts at $24,765. The SE model starts at $23,365, and the six-cylinder version costs $26,040.

Considerations

The SE model is traditionally aimed at young people or those looking for a "sporty" look. The LE model is more of a "family" sedan and has been so marketed from the beginning. Factor in price before making a purchase, as your monthly payments will be different for each model.
