Now let's consider the history of the tuning studio, and also understand why the cars with TRD nameplate does not belong to a number of classic Toyota.
The origins of TRD's formation go back to June 7, 1954. At that time, Toyota was known only within the Japanese state. The LandCruiser was produced without doors or a hardtop, and models such as the Crown and Corolla did not yet exist. On that date, a division of ToyotaTechnocraftCo., Ltd. was formed. Its tasks were to provide service of the manufactured cars. But with the growing popularity of Toyota brand, its cars began to participate in racing competitions. This required the release of specialized parts for power units, transmission, suspension and so on. As a result, this task fell on the specialists of TechnocraftCo, where a separate racing division was formed. If a customer wants to get a car with non-standard technical and operational features, it was sent to a separate division for the production of original parts for racing cars. Later it was named ToyotaRacingDevelopment.
Initially, the specialists of the department worked on the production of models for road-ring racing. At the same time, spare parts were supplied to private customers of the company. Later the produced cars started to participate in FORMULA-3. They successfully competed with cars of the following concerns:
Honda - Mugen;
Nissan - ThreeBond;
Mitsubishi - HKS.
In 1993 racing models produced by TRD began participating in the national Super GT championship. As for the differences between the racing and standard factory Toyota cars, the body frame and name remained virtually identical. With the set of popularity of such directions as drag racing and drifting, TRD specialists began to meet the requirements of connoisseurs of sports cars produced for the mentioned purposes.
Further expansion of the area of activity and strengthening of Toyota Motor's position in the American market, led to the necessity of conquering the world of motorsports. For this purpose, a new TRD USA department was formed in 1979. Due to the peculiarity of racing in the USA, the company specialists had to develop in new directions. Since that time and up to now modernized variations of the cars produced by the American branch take part in the following types of auto racing:
ChampionshipOffRoadRacing, CORR - national championships for off-road vehicles;
NASCAR - the association of circuit racing for cars and pickup trucks;
National Hot Rod Championships.
Now TRD products are the benchmark for tuning models of Toyota, Scion and Lexus cars. The reputation has been earned through repeated, significant victories of manufactured race cars by Toyota's factory atelier. A huge number of show cars also stand out. Without the developments of the TRD division, it is unlikely that the Mark, Supra models, capable of covering a distance of four hundred meters in ten seconds, would have been produced.
Camry 70 TRD
The Toyota Camry 70 TRD differs from the standard version in a number of modifications to the exterior and chassis settings. As a result, it is possible to improve the car's behavior on the track, which is reflected in an increase in the drive. The engine of the Camry 70 TRD has not undergone any changes, it also uses a six-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of three and a half liters.
Now the Camry 70 TRD is produced for consumers inside Japan, but there are plans to expand delivery points.
Appearance
In relation to the standard variation of the Camry 70, the TRD modification has identical dimensions:

Clearance of Camry 70 TRD is reduced by fifteen millimeters and amounts to 145 mm. This improved aerodynamics and handling at higher speeds by reducing the center of gravity.
The exterior of the 2020 TRD Toyota Camry 70 features aggressive features while retaining the appeal, dynamism and nobility of the original Camry 70. The bumper at the front is significantly more powerful with a modified air intake and a neat splitter that provides improved aerodynamics. The decorative, protective grille and LED-type optics haven't undergone any changes. The new model is equipped with nineteen-inch disks with low-profile rubber. Also, when looking from the side it is noted the presence of aerodynamic skirts. The rear of the upgraded Camry 70 is completed with a spoiler, TRD badge and simulated diffuser with two outlets for exhaust system. The colorful LED parking lights remain unchanged.
The American design studio Calty was in charge of making the aerodynamic tuning elements. It is planned to apply an exclusive coloring on the body, which will allow unmistakably identify the Camry 70 TRD, even in the dense stream of cars.
Car interior
The interior space of the Camry 70 TRD is almost identical to the generally available variation of the Camry. It uses high-quality finishing materials with excellent assembly. Efficient, near-perfect ergonomics is noted. Operating comfort is provided by the dashboard with clearly visible indications, large LCD screen and a steering wheel with three spokes. The steering wheel is finished in leather with bright red stitching. Red trim is also used to frame the floor mats.
For the driver and front passenger there are leather upholstered sport seats. They are equipped with side support, adjustable positioning in different directions, which contributes to the comfortable accommodation of people with a variety of complexities. The front row of seats of the ToyotaCamry 70 TRD 2020 is divided by an extensive armrest, which is equipped with a fairly capacious storage system. The area in front of the armrest features an area with a gear selector, a push-button station and two cupholders.
The luggage compartment has a capacity of 493 liters. Under the raised floor, there is space for a full-size spare wheel and tool kit.
Technical Specifications
The ToyotaCamry 70 TRD is powered by an atmospheric V6 3.5 petrol engine. Maximum torque is reached at 4,700 rpm and makes 362 N*m. The maximum power of the ICE is 301 hp at 6600 rpm. There is an eight-range automatic transmission, with manual operation function through the steering wheel switches. This combination provides a top speed of more than 220 km/h. And acceleration to a hundred kilometers per hour is carried out in less than seven and a half seconds. Gasoline consumption in the mixed cycle is not more than nine liters per hundred kilometers.
The basic elements of the upgraded Camry 70 are identical to the platform of the standard version. Exceptions are noted in the replacement of the following parts:
shock absorbers, springs;
enlarged anti-roll stabilizers with increased stiffness on the front axle by 44% and on the rear axle by 67%;
front discs with increased diameter to 328 mm, a brake system with a two-piston mechanism, which improves braking efficiency.
Calibration of the chassis of the Camry 70 TRD was carried out on race tracks. The model is available with front-wheel drive and EPS, with adjustable steering wheel position.
