Toyota's AZ engine range was developed in the new millennium. High technology, complex design and, as a consequence, high demands on fuel quality and operating conditions. Opinion of the units in this series is mixed. In the U.S. no problems with units have been noticed, but our drivers one after another publish complaints about the engine 2AZ-FE and its relatives.

2AZ-FE and its features

Remarkable for all power units of this series was the increase in piston stroke length. In this engine it was 96 millimetres. On the one hand, it ensured economy, but the other side of the medal prophesied a rapid wear of the engine parts. The 2AZ-FE engine's specifications spoke to the widest possible coverage of the corporation's vehicles:

These characteristics proved to be versatile and allowed the unit to be installed in both mass-produced reasonably priced cars, and in the corporation's global flagships. With the introduction of new technologies, Toyota 2AZ-FE engines have lost the main advantage, which the concern gained respect for all over the world. It is simplicity of design. The presence of many technological innovations has made the engine economical and environmentally friendly, but its repairs have become an expensive and complicated process.

Design features

Despite the shortcomings, the 2AZ FE engine for the most part has an original design

Cylinder block - cast-iron liners, not just fused into the aluminium body of the block, but also have high adhesion due to the uneven surface (dovetail);

crankshaft - steel forged on 5 legs with 8 counterweights, axis displaced 10 mm from cylinders to reduce wear, polymer gears to drive balancer shafts are fixed to it;

pistons - have moderately lightweight coated skirt, floating pins;

Cylinder head - intake ports are closer to vertical, cover is made of aluminium-magnesium alloy;

VVTi - only on intake camshaft, phase change within 50 degrees;

thermal valve gap adjustment - pushrods without washers;

piston cooling - oil pump inside crankcase, trochoid type;

piston cooling - injectors in block;

manifold arrangement - front exhaust manifold, rear intake manifold;
