The GR-FE Toyota Camry XV40 engine is powered by a single belt for the auxiliary units such as: alternator, water pump (pump), steering pump and air conditioner compressor.
It is called V-belt for auxiliary units, though car owners often call it an alternator belt.
In accordance with the service manual Toyota Camry XV40, inspection of the belt need to be carried out every 10,000 km or once a year of operation of the vehicle.
If tears, cracks and chafing are detected, the belt must be replaced.
What type of timing belt
The Toyota Camry XV40 with 2GR-FE engine is equipped with a single alternator belt marked 7PK 2093.

Replacing the Toyota Camry XV40 drive belt with your own hands
Mount the car on the platform and remove the engine cover.
Unscrew and remove the right front wheel.
Then unscrew and remove the right-hand wheel liner.
Use an Allen key to turn the tensioner arm until the hole in the arm aligns with the hole in the tensioner bracket.
Fix the tensioner arm in this position by inserting a pin of suitable diameter.
Remove the drive belt.
Install a new PVA belt and tensioner.
Rotate the crankshaft 3-4 times and check that the belt is in the correct position in the pulley grooves.
Reassemble all removed parts in reverse order.
For quick replacement of timing belt you will need the following tools:
wrenches "10"; "14";
a socket wrench "socket 17";
a new idler pulley;
new auxiliary belt.

How to choose an alternator belt
There shouldn't be any problems with tensioning a slightly stretched alternator belt on a Toyota Camry 40 by yourself.
Periodic tensioning of the drive belt on the Toyota Camry 40 is carried out with the aid of an adjustment screw. In advance, before tensioning the alternator belt, you should switch off the engine, remove the minus terminal from the battery and get to the generating unit itself.

If tensioning did not help and after adjustment the belt continues to slip, whistle and does not give the necessary charge to consumers, then the only way out of the situation is replacement.

One of the weaknesses of the Camry 40 (generation) is the attachment, namely, the generator.
In conditions of severe local climate, driving with abrupt acceleration and deceleration, frequent idling in traffic jams, etc. the generator not always "survives" due to its service life.
Especially taking into account the fact that Camry is very heavily equipped with electronic systems and components, and all this equipment requires a powerful and high-quality power source.

How to spot a broken alternator
Most often, a malfunction of the alternator and other related components can be determined without even looking under the bonnet.
If there is insufficient charging from the alternator, when a running motor (at idling speed) and switching on additional units, their operation will not be the same as it must be in an operational vehicle.
For example, when you turn on headlights, their light will be dimmer than usual, and activation of air conditioner or a heater can lead to noticeable fall of engine rpm (up to a muffling of a motor).
Moreover, above-mentioned problems may disappear at high engine revolutions (over 2,000 rpm).
Another way to tell if there is a problem with the alternator is by looking at the indicator light and the voltmeter pointer/readings (there is no analogue voltage indicator on the camry 40, but the information can be seen on the display).
The indicator lamp is the battery icon on the instrument panel in the passenger compartment. Normally this lamp may illuminate for a few seconds when the engine is switched on and then go out - this is perfectly normal.
If the light stays on for a long time or flashes while the engine is running, it is an indication of problems with the alternator or other electronic components of the car.
It is also worth pointing out that the warning light should illuminate when the engine is started and should illuminate brightly, no dimmer than other dashboard indicators.
A dim illumination of the indicator may indicate a problem with poor wiring contact in the control lamp power supply circuit or a faulty rectifier unit.
If the indicator does not illuminate when the engine is on, it may indicate a broken alternator, poor contact or faulty wiring (fuses, switches).
Often it may also indicate a faulty or poor quality (discharged) battery.
