The new Toyota Camry 2021: the engine trick is a success

The new Toyota Camry 2021: the engine trick is a success

Meet the new Toyota Camry 2021. I know it's not easy for you, looking from the outside, to believe me, but the popular Japanese sedan has really become a bit different and has definitely improved. First of all, in engines. It has new ones: 2,0 and 2,5 litres. We know them from Toyota RAV4. Both have an increased compression ratio and direct fuel injection. But that shouldn't scare you, Toyota allows the use of 92 petrol.

Compared to the previous engines of the pre-styled Camry, both dynamics and fuel economy have improved. As you look at the specs, it looks like a miracle. With volume of the engine of 2,0 litres and with the same capacity - 150 hp. The Japanese promise that acceleration up to 100 km/h is 1,5 s quicker and the consumption is 1 litre less.

Toyota Camry has become faster.

And what's amazing, you can believe the specs. Before the restyling, the Toyota Camry with a 2.0-liter engine was barely sold, with most buyers opting for the 2.5-liter engine. But you know how many of these sedans are sold to taxi and corporate clients, where comfort is prioritized before dynamics. However, the previous engine even paired with a 6-speed automatic was very reluctant. Therefore the demand was minimal.

Toyota Camry has updated motors.

After the first acquaintance, it is difficult to say how the buyers of Toyota Camry 2021 will accept the new 2-litre engine. The proportion of conservatives among them is very high and it will be hard for them to believe that with the same power the sedan has gone. But it does. Torque has increased from 192 Nm to 206 Nm, and it's reached earlier.

Toyota Camry perfectly blends in the mountain scenery of Anapa, on serpentines it won't spoil the company.

Our crew, driving leisurely in Anapa, has managed to keep the consumption within 5,5 litres per 100 kilometers. On highway, at speeds around 110 km/h it went up to 6 litres. There is both a merit of the new motor, and a variator with a fixed first gear, which we know from crossover RAV4. And there it works both with front-wheel drive and with all-wheel drive.

The Toyota Camry 2021 has become more dynamic; it is not afraid of active steering.

Thus, the new Toyota Camry 2021 shouldn't have any questions with reliability, and in prospect occurrence of 4x4 version is also possible, but it's more of a fantasy.

Certainly, one has to press on gas to have appreciable acceleration and after 3,000 rpm one can hear the engine in the interior. But the variator tries to imitate fixed gears, so there is no monotonous howling.

The 2.5 litre engine is also new and now comes with an 8-speed automatic. Almost the same as the Toyota RAV4, only the power has been raised to 200bhp. Torque has also increased in comparison with its forerunner, acceleration up to a hundred has decreased from 9,8 to 8,7 seconds, and the consumption has absolutely abyssed: 6,8 against 8,3. However, such impressive effect, as in case with the 2,0 litre engine, is not felt.

Firstly, the former engine drove not bad either, and the character of the new unit is spoilt by the new automatic device. The box gravitates to higher gear ratios, and it does not have enough traction on low revolutions. As a result, the box is often confused in gears. The 3,5 liters engine also suffers with it, but in a lesser degree, its legendary elasticity forgives transmission's mistakes.

The interior is updated minimum, the multimedia screen has grown up.

There is already 7 inches in base, and in more expensive versions the diagonal will grow up to 9 inches. In the past, 8" was the maximum size. To fit the new screen into the triangle of the centre console, it had to be raised on its own pedestal.

The multimedia screen has grown up.

Deflectors are moved down and the screen is now at the level of instrument panel. It seems to be logical, though such decision cannot be called beautiful. More modest colours have replaced plastic details like wood.

One would like a completely digital dashboard to complete the picture, as at Germans and Koreans, but Japanese are too conservative.

As a whole, even base devices are readable not bad, only once fashionable wells limit the review. For example, a passenger sitting in front can see speedometer arrow only up to 110 km/h, it goes further from view, but it may be for the best.

Instruments are analogue.

I still like the huge central armrest and the niche for a mobile phone under the climate control.

Passengers in the Toyota Camry like to sit in the back, there's plenty of room for both head and feet.

As before, there is enough space in back, and in expensive versions there is an electric backrest for right and left passengers. It sounds cool, though in reality the range is not big at all, and the angle of installation of backrest in cheap versions is quite comfortable as it is.

Toyota Camry: It's great that the roof doesn't lie on your head, even at the height of 180 cm.

Also, in the top, the person sitting in the back can change the volume and change the radio stations themselves. There's also a separate rear climate control, although this can be seen in the more affordable Skoda Octavia.

There is, however, an in-built SIM card with internet in the car and remote control. For the first year, the network is prepaid at the rate of 10GB a month. After that, you have to pay for it yourself. The service provider is MTS. You can use a special mobile app to monitor the overall condition of your car and at the same time check the battery charge. That's if you've gone on holiday for a couple of weeks, the Camry is waiting for you at home, and the satellite alarm smoothly absorbs the charge.

The boot has gotten bigger.

And now pay attention: the boot volume has increased and the hump on the floor has disappeared. The full-size spare has been replaced by a spare wheel! Experts from Toyota have counted that we use this wheel seldom, but we fill a boot more often. In addition, a narrow spare is cheaper than a full-size and it's the same for all versions, which simplifies car assembly, and thus slightly reduces the price.

The Toyota Camry 2021 will hit the road soon, we're waiting for the price announcement.

For those who like to get hotter, there will be Toyota Camry GR-Sport version. It's a development of the S-edition that debuted a year ago and appealed to customers. However, do not expect from it real sports, it is only about external styling.

The black roof, red inserts on the bumpers and bright accents in the cabin. Toyota Camry is not supposed to have neither rigid suspension, nor forced motors. Moreover, they would hardly be demanded.

I have raised a degree and today I have rolled in red Camry. It is a strange combination, but visually, to my taste, it is quite organic. Except that behind effective nameplates GR hides standard chassis, base brakes and new 2,5L engine. It is obvious Toyota's bestseller, but it does not smell of sports. It is simply a pleasant sedan for Russian destinations. The engine is more powerful, it's got an 8 speed automatic instead of a 6 speed and it's 0.3s faster when accelerating to a hundred. And if you want real speed, it is of course Camry 3,5. Claimed 7.7 seconds to 100 and a top speed over 200. One problem - nothing has changed in it apart from the front bumper. Probably, it is good as it is!

Reminder! Now Toyota has formed a very interesting range of units. Base 2,0-liter with a variator goes surprisingly briskly for its forces. The engine 2,5 is a true classic, and 3,5 V6 is a legend, about which songs are composed. The new Toyota Camry 2021 will keep up with its buyers, who are becoming more dynamic and enterprising.
