2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE.

Like the new Camry's conventional petrol powertrain, Toyota's new hybrid system has been designed to deliver better and smoother performance.

The new Sequential Shiftmatic technology in the 2018 Camry allows the driver to 'shift' the variator, mimicking a fast-acting six-speed automatic gearbox using paddle shifters or a console-mounted shift lever. At the same time, it aims to strike an optimum balance between high power output and energy efficiency.

The 2018 Camry Hybrid was available in three variants: LE, SE and XLE. In addition to improved handling and driving performance, the 2018 Camry Hybrid offers a best-in-class EPA rating of 5.5 city / 5.3 highway / 5.2 combined with the LE grade. That's 30% more for the combined per litre.

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Driving performance and luggage space are improved by the introduction of the new TNGA pack, which allows the battery pack of the hybrid system to be moved from the boot area under the rear seat. This helps to position the weight of the battery at a lower centre of gravity.

The updated Power Control Unit (PCU) of the new hybrid system plays a key role in improving the efficiency of the eco-friendly powertrain.

Like the Toyota Prius, the PCU is lighter and more compact by using a new power unit structure, allowing the unit to be placed directly above the gearbox. This new design lowers the overall centre of mass of the car and allows for a lower bonnet height.

The 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid is equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack at LE level and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack at SE and XLE.

Alongside the Camry Hybrid system's traditional driving modes: Normal, Eco and EV, a new Sport driving mode setting has been added to increase the power of the hybrid system for improved acceleration response over pedal operation. Each of the Normal, Eco and Sport modes can be used when EV mode is activated.

The Camry Hybrid also features a new Automatic Glide Control (AGC) system that helps improve fuel economy by calculating efficient coasting logic.

In normal driving, engine braking will slow the car down when the driver pulls away from the accelerator pedal. However, to avoid aggressive engine braking, AGC limits the loss of vehicle speed with an automatic drive setting that acts more like a neutral gear, allowing the vehicle to coast to a traffic light.

Toyota Camry 2018 transmission options

2018 Toyota Camry LE what reviews are owners saying about it?

Three new engines have been made available on the 2018 Toyota Camry :

The 2.5 litre D-4S inline four-cylinder engine (four-stroke with direct fuel injection, an improved version) petrol engine

3.5-litre V6 engine with D-4S fuel injection

Toyota Hybrid system

Both the 2.5 litre D-4S and 3.5 litre V6 D-4S engines are paired to an eight-speed Direct-Shift (8AT) automatic transmission.

Dynamic Force 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine

Toyota claims that the 2.5-litre four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine has outstanding combustion efficiency, delivering high power output. The then-new powertrain incorporated a number of Toyota's most advanced technologies, including Dual VVT-i with VVT-iE, D-4S with direct injection and laser-coated valve seats for optimum power output, lower emissions and fuel efficiency.

Admittedly, the petrol engine's output isn't too great - 177bhp at 5,700rpm and 221Nm at 3,600-5,200rpm. - But something tells us that the emphasis in the engine was not on maximum power, but on fuel economy...

Fuel economy is estimated by the EPA at 11l/100km city / 7l/100km highway / which is 26% more for combined km per litre compared to the previous model year Camry.

Other technological innovations for the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force engine included a variable cooling system, a fully variable oil pump and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system.

3.5-litre V6 engine

Like the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force engine, the newly developed 2018 Toyota Camry 3.5-litre V6 engine featured an advanced D-4S direct injection system. It also came with a specially developed VVT-iW variable valve timing system. These engine technologies promised higher power output and best-in-class fuel economy.

The 24-valve DOHC 3.5L V6 engine uses VVT-iW for intake, with VVT-i on exhaust, an effective compression ratio of 11.8: 1 and a more square cylinder diameter and stroke of 3.70" and 3.27" respectively. The VVTi is also equipped with a long stroke, compared to the longer stroke of the Camry's 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder powertrain.

Power output is 301bhp at 6,600rpm and impressive torque of 267lb-ft at 4,700rpm.

The 3.5-litre V6 engine has achieved exemplary fuel economy with an EPA rating of 22 miles per gallon city / 33 miles per gallon highway / 26 miles per gallon combined, an eight per cent increase for combined miles per gallon over the previous V6.

Direct-shift eight-speed automatic gearbox

Both the 2.5-litre four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine and the 3.5-litre V6 were fitted with the then-new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic gearbox. This allows the driver to experience the engines direct acceleration capability, as well as the fast-shifting performance-oriented transmission.

The new gearbox also included a torque converter, which offered a wider lock-up range (compared to the previous six-speed automatic gearbox) for a more direct driving experience, while helping to improve fuel efficiency by suppressing engine revs.

Toyota Camry 2018 Price by trim

The 2018 Toyota Camry LE

At launch, the 2018 Camry had an initial recommended price of $23,495 for the base level and $34,950 for the top-end XSE V6; with the Camry Hybrid LE starting at $27,800. Today, the 2018 Toyota Camry is an affordable car, widely available in all sorts of trims and configurations.

Using av.by's Fair Market Range pricing, we've researched and compiled data on current Camry '18 prices by section and options across the country. Of course, these are average prices, which can vary depending on factors such as condition, mileage and location. But given that the Camry is such a ubiquitous car, good deals can easily be found around $25,500.
